Chapter 15

She hated the smell of hospitals. The sounds, the ticking and whirs, and the bleeps and burps of machinery got more annoying with every day she had to be at the place. Cee-Cee hurried down the glossy hallway, eyes scanning the numbers by the door of each room. On her shoulder was a bag of books that felt like they weighed a ton. Winny's condition had improved enough to allow her to be picky about what to read, and Cee-Cee had damn near brought the entire library.

She breezed into the room and spotted her dad pulling on his peacoat to get to the university for his first class. When she saw her mother was still asleep, she dropped her voice to a whisper.

“Sorry I’m late, Dad. I overslept.”

“It’s okay. She was up half the night, too, reading the book you left yesterday. I was going to sneak out. I knew you’d fill in for me as soon as you could. Which is what I wanted to talk to you about. Cee-Cee, are you sure you’re getting enough rest? You look terrible. You don’t have to be here your every waking hour, and I know Phoenix is home. He needs you, too.”

Cee-Cee waved dismissively and moved to sit by the bed, but Marty stopped her. She laughed softly. “Oh, Phoenix is fine! He’ll probably enjoy the peace and quiet while I’m out since he got in late last night, and this is Mom we’re talking about. He knows I’m not gonna leave her here without someone on hand in case she needs something.”

“This is a fully staffed hospital. There’s always someone on hand.”

“What are you trying to say, Dad?”

He shrugged, feigning a casual attitude. “I’m just wondering if there aren’t things at home you need to tend to?” She sighed and scratched the back of her head, glancing away. “I’ve noticed, honey. You’re sad. You’re quiet. You’re withdrawing. Everything okay?”

“I’m worried about my mother. Is that a crime?”

Marty gently lifted the heavy book bag off her shoulder and set it next to the hospital bed.

“You’re running away from your relationship,” he replied matter-of-factly. “Winny picked an opportune time to take ill. Gives you an excuse not to address the problems in your life. But I’m not going to let you do that. I’ve watched you run long enough—to class, to work…Cee-Cee, you deserve to be loved. You know that, right?”

“Not now, Dad. I really can’t right now.”

He studied her, and Cee-Cee tried to hide her tears. She had sprung a leak out of the blue. That was happening a lot lately. She didn’t know how to talk to her father about the issues she was having with Ashley and Phoenix, even if Marty was right. She was running. It seemed easier to focus on the big picture, getting her mother well. And with only the two of them available to stand watch, Cee-Cee wasn’t about to let romance get in the way of her responsibilities as a daughter.

Marty ran a thumb over her cheek and dried her face.
