Chapter 15
She hated the smell of hospitals. The sounds, the ticking and whirs, and the bleeps and burps of machinery got more annoying with every day she had to be at the place. Cee-Cee hurried down the glossy hallway, eyes scanning the numbers by the door of each room. On her shoulder was a bag of books that felt like they weighed a ton. Winny's condition had improved enough to allow her to be picky about what to read, and Cee-Cee had damn near brought the entire library.
She breezed into the room and spotted her dad pulling on his peacoat to get to the university for his first class. When she saw her mother was still asleep, she dropped her voice to a whisper.
âSorry Iâm late, Dad. I overslept.â
âItâs okay. She was up half the night, too, reading the book you left yesterday. I was going to sneak out. I knew youâd fill in for me as soon as you could. Which is what I wanted to talk to you about. Cee-Cee, are you sure youâre getting enough rest? You look terrible. You donât have to be here your every waking hour, and I know Phoenix is home. He needs you, too.â
Cee-Cee waved dismissively and moved to sit by the bed, but Marty stopped her. She laughed softly. âOh, Phoenix is fine! Heâll probably enjoy the peace and quiet while Iâm out since he got in late last night, and this is Mom weâre talking about. He knows Iâm not gonna leave her here without someone on hand in case she needs something.â
âThis is a fully staffed hospital. Thereâs always someone on hand.â
âWhat are you trying to say, Dad?â
He shrugged, feigning a casual attitude. âIâm just wondering if there arenât things at home you need to tend to?â She sighed and scratched the back of her head, glancing away. âIâve noticed, honey. Youâre sad. Youâre quiet. Youâre withdrawing. Everything okay?â
âIâm worried about my mother. Is that a crime?â
Marty gently lifted the heavy book bag off her shoulder and set it next to the hospital bed.
âYouâre running away from your relationship,â he replied matter-of-factly. âWinny picked an opportune time to take ill. Gives you an excuse not to address the problems in your life. But Iâm not going to let you do that. Iâve watched you run long enoughâto class, to workâ¦Cee-Cee, you deserve to be loved. You know that, right?â
âNot now, Dad. I really canât right now.â
He studied her, and Cee-Cee tried to hide her tears. She had sprung a leak out of the blue. That was happening a lot lately. She didnât know how to talk to her father about the issues she was having with Ashley and Phoenix, even if Marty was right. She was running. It seemed easier to focus on the big picture, getting her mother well. And with only the two of them available to stand watch, Cee-Cee wasnât about to let romance get in the way of her responsibilities as a daughter.
Marty ran a thumb over her cheek and dried her face.
